Health Of A Rose Plant

The health of a rose plant can be judged by the health of its leaves. So the first important thing is to prune the dead leaves. Get rid of the lower branches as well as they have the tendency to grow fungus as they come in contact with soil.

Leaves of the plant also help you to understand the watering situation, especially if they are being deprived of water.

Watering Tips For Rose Plant

During the summer, water the plants frequently as the top layer starts getting dry. This could be as frequent as once a day, and try watering early in the day so that the plant can withstand the water stress when the sun is up.

When you water the plants in the evening, the roots remain soaked during the night hours. This might support fungal growth, which is, by the way, very common in rose plants. Secondly, don’t water from a height with pressure, as this exposes and harms the roots.

Also, keep some space above the soil. This gives an opportunity for the water to stand and be absorbed completely.

Fertilizing Tips For Rose Plant

The extra space will also be very helpful when you add compost to the plant. Don’t stop fertilizing the plant in summers, even if it’s not flowering. This helps the leaves to grow well. I recommend homemade compost that will release nutrients slowly.

I also add an inch of compost peat. This will help retain moisture for longer. You can also use coconut husk, the outer cover of the coconut.

Optimal Sun light

Now the most important fact, the sun. Do not deprive your rose plants of the sun in summer. Place them in such a way that they get filtered or less intense sun. Noon sun in summers can be harsh for any plant.

So I have placed mine in a place that gets partially evening sun.

Some Additional Tips

Lastly, keep a close check on insects, fungus, and diseases. Clear the soil of dead leaves and spray some Neem Oil.

Even if you don’t see any disease or fungus on them, I would recommend that you try spraying the oil once a month or once every one and a half months. It just helps to protect the plant.
